PHYTOMUCILLAGINE
Contains pulverized Plantago ovata Forssk and with it its Ispagula cuticola husk, which is the common name for the seed coating of the plant.
According to the EMA (European Medicines Agency), it can be used in the treatment of habitual constipation (constipation not caused by a physical alteration of an organ) and in conditions where it is desirable to soften stools to reduce pain during passage through the anal canal, for example in the presence of anal fissures, hemorrhoids, as well as after surgery involving the anus or rectum.
It can be used in subjects for whom an increase in daily dietary fiber intake may be recommended, such as patients with irritable bowel syndrome suffering from constipation or, in combination with diet, in patients with hypercholesterolemia (high blood cholesterol levels). Ispagula cuticola contains a dietary fiber which, when mixed with water, forms a gelatinous mass that acts as a mild laxative (medicine used to treat constipation).
The gelatinous mass passes through the gastrointestinal tract and softens stools by increasing their water content. At the same time, Ispagula cuticola lubricates the intestine and promotes stool transit. Some studies have been conducted on blood cholesterol levels, finding that treatment with Ispagula cuticola resulted in small reductions in blood levels (source EMA)
